A Guide For Support Workers

27th June 2025

Belonging Matters Advisory Council (BMAC) and Belonging Matters, a grass roots organisation that provides information, resources, training, advice, and mentoring about social inclusion and belonging, has developed a Guide for Support Workers of people with intellectual disability and autism. The guide is available for FREE in PDF format and can be obtained from the Belonging Matters Online Shop  via this link: A Guide for Support Workers – Digital Edition | belongingmatters

The guide is based on the desires and actual experiences of people with intellectual disability and autism. It provides information about:

  • the role of the support worker
  • what ‘good’ support looks like
  • how to get to know the person you are supporting and treat them as individuals
  • communication needs and practices
  • how to encourage participation in community and
  • supported decision making.

Why are we sharing this information?

We are sharing this information because we believe that support workers will benefit from the insights and experiences that people with intellectual disability and autism bring to understanding what good disability support looks like. This is also a useful resource for people with disabilities to identify what is good support.
