International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD)

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated every year on 3 December. It has been observed by the United Nations following the General Assembly’s proclamation on 14 October 1992. The aim is to increase the public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

Every year there is an agreed focus for IDPwD with the theme for 2025 being about fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress, which stems from the need for everyone to work collectively to ensure fair and equitable rights for people with disability in society. Members of the United Nations, including Australia, have agreed to the Doha Political Declaration, which is a promise to work collectively towards a world that is more just, inclusive, equitable and sustainable.

In Australia, IDPwD is a combined effort between government, schools, organisations, community groups, businesses and individuals.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, funds a national program to help promote and raise awareness of this day.

IDPwD is an opportunity for everyone to be a part of creating an inclusive and diverse community for the 5.5 million people with disability in Australia.

This year Jen Jackson-Hall, the Disability Services Commissioner (VIC), will be attending an event organised by the Victorian Public Sector Enablers Network to celebrate IDPwD. The Enablers Network is an employee-led association for people with lived experience of disability and their allies in the Victorian public sector. The event this year has guest speakers, awards and a panel to reflect on 10 years since the establishment of the Enablers Network.
